Structure of the Toolkit
The toolkit has two main parts:
- Descriptions of a 5 stage process for implementing diversity management. These stages are made up of a number of activities, each of which is described in detail.
- A set of tools which support each of these phases of activities.
A 5 Stage Process for Implementing Diversity Management
This phase is concerned with setting up the diversity management project in an efficient way. It deals with issues such as marketing the programme, developing support for the programme, setting up a project team, scoping the project and developing reporting relationships.
This phase is concerned with assessing the needs and opportunities for diversity management in your organization, assessing exiting activities in the area of diversity management and identifying new issues for incorporation into the developing diversity management programme.
This phase is concerned with organizing solutions to the problems and opportunities which have been identified previously. The activities of this phase enable you to develop and plan the diversity management programme which has been tailored to the needs of your workplace.
This phase describes the activities you will need to undertake to implement your diversity management programme. It deals with such issues as the creation of workplace policy in the area, the development and implementation on training and the raising of awareness amongst employees of diversity management.
This phase aims to integrate the diversity management programme into general HRM policy and practice. It does so though establishing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for each stage of the process of implementation. This enables the programme to be improved and for its integration into general organizational practice.
Tools for Diversity Management
The toolkit also provides a set of tools which support the activities of each of the phases. These tools are of two types. First, many tools have been developed specifically for DiManT. Second, DiManT has undertaken a survey of tools which are generally available in the area.
There is a two level description provided for each tool which has been included in the toolkit. The first level is a standardised, general level description of the tool, the structure of which is outlined below. The second level description consists of the tool itself, where these are available. Where it has not been possible to obtain the source tool, a reference to where it may be obtained is provided. General level tool description structure
All tools contained within the DiManT toolkit are described according to the following structure:
- Name of Tool - this gives the official name of the tool
- Function of Tool - this section describes what the tools is used for, its aims and objectives
- Description of Tool - this section describes the nature of the tool and its method of usage
- Source - this section provides information on the original source of the tool and its cost. Where possible, direct access will be given to the tool
- Languages - this section describes the languages in which the tool is available
- Previous Usage - this section describes any previously known usage of the tool and will provide links to the case study material, where possible
- References - this section provides detailed references for the tool, where available
- Target audience - this section describes who should use the tool and who should be involved in using the tool
- Keywords - this section contains a short selection of key words which describe the tool
